Access Control System Control System and Fire Doors Procedure

DOOR ALARMS AND HARDWARE

HSL entry and emergency exit doors are equipped with two different types of alarms: electronic access control devices equipped with sounders and, DETEX hardware equipped with fire horns.

ALL exterior library doors are covered by the electronic access system. The new public entrance door (T-334) is on an autolock schedule pre-determined according to library hours. T-227 (disabled access) and T-230 (staff access) are equipped with card readers all hours.

Access system alarms: An 'exit request' feature on the autolock doors provides a ten-second delay which allows someone to exit thru those doors without activating the sounder. With that exception, when someone exits thru any locked library door, whether a public entrance or a fire door that is permanently locked, a sounder will activate while the door is held open and an electronic alert will be sent to the security control panel, which is monitored by the HSB guard or UWPD outside of regular library hours. As soon as the door is closed, the sounder will stop and the door again is locked, with no action required to disable the sounder. A "forced door" message remains in the system after the sounder stops. Outside of regular library hours the HSB guard responds to alarm messages generated by the system. Reports can be generated to show by individual name what keycards have been used to enter the library after hours.

DETEX system alarms: DETEX doors have exit push bars, in addition to coverage by the electronic access system. When someone exits thru a DETEX door the horn sounds ONLY within the Library and adjacent corridors; there is no link to UWPD, the fire department, or the HSB guard station. CAAMS monitors but doesn't respond every time someone exits through these doors. Following is a list of all HSL doors by number, along with the type of hardware.

Autolock door:
T-334 – New main entrance

Card readers
T-227 - Equipped with card reader for disabled entrance
T-230 – Equipped with card reader for staff entrance

Emergency doors (all on Access Control System; permanently locked)
A-101 basement access
2A/Str1 north A-wing emergency exit next to study rooms
2T/Str2 T-wing emergency exit across from water fountain
T-323-1- east emergency exit from Microlab
T-323-2 north emergency exit from TLC/Microlab
T-348A west emergency exit from Microlab

To arrange for access thru emergency doors without activating Access Control system alarms, call Classroom Services (543-6729), Maralee Morado (685-2226) or University Police (543-9331). Specify the doors for which exit is needed and the time period for which alarms should be deactivated.
