Reserves FAQS
I can't find ...
- Check the UW Libraries'
Catalog, including the link to the list of electronic reserves, to make
sure that the item has actually been placed on reserve.
- Show the student how to read the course record and determine the location. NOTE: This
location is not always the HSLIC reserve shelves
- If necessary, walk up to the shelves with the student.
- Items which are not on the shelves are probably in use by another student. Look around
the Course Reserves area and on the reshelving trucks.
- If a student feels that something is missing rather than in use, ask him/her to complete
the HealthLinks Ask a
Question form. Stress again to the student that the item is more likely to be in use
than to be missing and that checking back frequently is the best way to access it.
My instructor SAID it was on Reserve!
- If you have looked in the U.W. Libraries Catalog, including the list of
electronic reserves, and can find no record of an item being on reserve, the
item is not yet available. Suggest that the student check with the TA or instructor
for the class. The student can also complete the HealthLinks
Ask a Question form and reserves staff will check into the situation.
- Course lists that arrive arter the deadline are done in the order received. If there is a
backlog, reserves staff will create a course record for the catalog and put a note in the
record indicating an expected availability date.
I need a password for e-reserves.
This reserve item says Library Use Only. Can I take it out of the library?
- Reserve items are marked Library Use Only when the instructor does NOT want
the item checked out. The resources for using the item are available in the library, so
please encourage the user to take advantage of them. With prior arrangements, exceptions
can be made for instructors who want to use the materials in class and for disabled
users who must use some sort of adaptive equipment not available in the library.
I need this a little longer. Can I renew it?
- Items are placed on Reserve because they are needed for course work. There
is generally a high demand for them. So, no, they cannot be renewed. The one
exception is nursing distance tapes which normally have a one-week loan period.
The reserve book I want is checked out. Can I put a hold on it?
- Holds cannot be placed on reserve items. Since these are high use items, it's important that
they be available for class members whenever they are not in use. It generally takes too long
between the time an item is returned and the time the requester can pick it up.
How do I place something on Reserve for a course?
- Fill out a Reserves List Form from the Forms Counter and hand it in at the
Circulation Desk. Reserve list forms are also available on HealthLinks at
http://healthlinks.washington.edu/hsl/forms/reserves.html.
- Hand in any personal copies and/or photocopies of articles at the Circulation
Desk.
How do I get a video to show in class?
- If the video is in the U.W. Libraries Catalog and is available in the HSLIC book stacks, the
instructor or TA can just check it out as they would a book. Holds can be places on videos from
the regular collection.
- If the video is on reserve for a class, contact
Reserves staff.
- If an item is not in the HSLIC collection or the faculty member needs help finding appropriate
a/v materials for a class, he/she should be referred to
Mary Van Court.
I want to use a model for class
- The models are on open shelving in the reserves area. The standing skeleton
is also in the area. They are also listed in the UW Libraries Catalog. They
don't generally circulate. However, you may check them out to an instructor
who wants to use them for a class. If you have any questions about this, you
can refer the instructor to Reserves
staff.
I have to watch an animal training video
- All Health Sciences staff who work with animals have to view a video on the laws and regulations
concerning laboratory use of animals. Because we're centrally located, the tape has been placed on reserve here under the "course" name Animal Use Training Session.
Is there a room where I can watch videos with my classmates?
- All of the study rooms have vcrs in them. Students are encouraged to reserve
study rooms for videotape viewing. There is additional a/v equipment on the
reserve shelves if the students want to view slides or listen to audio tapes
in the study rooms.
